2014 Anne-Sophie Dubois Fleurie "Clepsydre"

 The 2013 Fleurie Clepsydre was cropped at 20 hectoliter per hectare due to poor flowering on the 60- to 80-year-old vines. It has a slightly richer and more opulent nose than the Alchemiste without losing any of its precision. The palate is medium-bodied with fleshy, ripe tannin, well-judged acidity and a gentle grip upon the structured finish. This has great potential: a very natural and refined Fleurie courtesy of Anne-Sophie Dubois. What can be more pleasurable than a fresh, crisp Fleurie, maybe slightly cooled and allowed to warm in your glass. Not much, especially when it comes from talented Anne-Sophie Dubois. She just has the right approach to winemaking – adhering to traditional methods of vinification and allowing her Fleurie to "sing." I tasted two recent releases from Anne-Sophie and, like previous wines, they are a) difficult to pronounce and b) absolutely delicious. My one regret is that I have not yet found the time to visit the domaine, but I will address that next time I am in the region. (NM)  (6/2015)

 Brilliant ruby-red. Highly expressive red fruit and floral aromas are complemented by subtle hints of game and exotic spices. Offers sweet cherry and raspberry flavors that show suave, juicy character and impressive precision and lift. I tasted this wine twice, and I will say by day two it had completely come alive with hallmark notes of violet and raspberry, silky medium body and radiating an amazing pink granite minerality that is uniquely and deliciously Fleurie. Fresh and delicious with great length, the lesson learned here is to give this Beaujolais plenty of air and reap the benefits! Lovely wine.

Gamay

- Ah, poor, oft-maligned Gamay. Once widely planted in Burgundy, today the grape is largely confined to Beaujolais. The varietal, officially called Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc is vigorous, early-ripening and can grow in cooler climates. The grapes naturally high acidity, low tannins and low potential alcohol lends itself to exuberant, fruity wines, ranging from the early-release Beaujolais Nouveau, to the more serious Cru Beaujolais from villages like Brouilly, Moulin-à-Vent and St-Amour that are steadily gaining in popularity (and can age remarkably well). Outside of Beaujolais, Gamay is also grown in small amounts around the Loire where it is called Anjou Gamay and Gamay de Touraine. It is also grown in Burgundy's Côte Chalonnaise where it is blended with Pinot Noir, as it is in Switzerland.
