 Bright ruby-red. A wild, assertively perfumed bouquet evokes cherry pit, dark berries, licorice and pungent flowers, and a subtle touch of gaminess emerges slowly. Weighty yet lively, offering palate-staining blackberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter as the wine opens up.  The 2014 Fleurie l'Alchimiste, which comes from the lieu-diet of "Les Labourons," is 100% destemmed and fermented 70% in oak cask and 30% in cement. It has a crisp and clean redcurrant and cranberry leaf bouquet that neatly disguises the wood element (I would hardly notice any if tasted blind). The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine line of acidity and plenty of lovely tart red cherry fruit on the elegant finish. This is another finely honed Fleurie from the talented Anne-Sophie Dubois. (NM)  (8/2016)

Bright and lean, yet spicy on the nose, this is a classic Fleurie that is refreshing, tangy and shines with slate minerality. Good stuff!

Gamay

- Ah, poor, oft-maligned Gamay. Once widely planted in Burgundy, today the grape is largely confined to Beaujolais. The varietal, officially called Gamay Noir à Jus Blanc is vigorous, early-ripening and can grow in cooler climates. The grapes naturally high acidity, low tannins and low potential alcohol lends itself to exuberant, fruity wines, ranging from the early-release Beaujolais Nouveau, to the more serious Cru Beaujolais from villages like Brouilly, Moulin-à-Vent and St-Amour that are steadily gaining in popularity (and can age remarkably well). Outside of Beaujolais, Gamay is also grown in small amounts around the Loire where it is called Anjou Gamay and Gamay de Touraine. It is also grown in Burgundy's Côte Chalonnaise where it is blended with Pinot Noir, as it is in Switzerland.
