2013 Calera "Mills Vineyard" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
Jensen's 2013 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard is a beauty! It possesses a medium ruby color and sumptuous notes of mulled cherries, raspberries, dusty earth, spice box and wild herbs. Medium-bodied, richly textured, balanced and lively, with good acidity and a great finish, this is a terrific Pinot Noir to drink over the coming decade. (JD)
A fascinating feral quality wraps around this wine, redolent of mottled animal hair, raw meat and scraped earth, like the scene of a freshly hunted wild boar. Aromas of mulberry and dark strawberry also show on the nose, while the palate dives deep into turned earth, shiitake mushrooms, juniper, stewed bay leaf, wild cherry and elderflower liqueur. The acidity also pops and the texture grips firmly.
Calera's 2013 Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard boasts notable intensity, with a sense of linear structure that differentiates it in the lineup. The tannins need time to soften, so readers will have to be patient. Hints of sweet red cherry, hard candy, mint, herbs, wild flowers and rose petals give the Mills its signature inner sweetness as the flavors continue to brighten up as the wine sits in the glass. White pepper, blood orange and pomegranate add the closing layers of nuance. 94+ points. Drink 2019-2028 (AG)
Medium-weight, with a firm, tannic start and modest red berry and tea flavors, gaining complexity and depth while maintaining delicacy and restraint. Ends clean and elegant. (JL)
