2013 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva

SKU #1272664 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The Cantele 2013 Salice Salentino Riserva shows a greater level of depth and finesse compared to many of its peers. The wine is packed tight with blackberry fruit, with Maraschino cherry, plum and prune in abundance. The wine is chewy and rich for sure, but it also provides an authentic and generous portrait of a red wine from Puglia. A spicy beef or lamb dish would make the perfect pairing partner. Puglia seems a world away sometimes but it is one of the Best value regions in Italy and the indigenous varieties there produce strikingly delicious examples. This wine’s aromatics are full of Middle Eastern spice, elegant plum, bramble, dried-cherry fruit and nuances of fresh Provencal herbs. On the palate the wine is supple, medium bodied while still being so full flavored, easy to drink, only 13.0% alcohol yet this multifaceted red always beckons you for another sip and then another it is just so tasty. Made from 100% Negroamaro fermented in stainless steel and aged in 1-2 year old barrique for 6 months. This complex yet elegant wine comes from Puglia, the heel of the Italian Peninsula and is the perfect accompaniment to your favorite tomato based pasta dish.

Surprisingly mineral-driven for Puglia, a region better known for fruity, bombastic wines, the 2013 Cantele Salice Salentino Riserva is a darker, more subtle negroamaro, bright with blackberry and plum, herbal notes, and an easygoing but peppery finish. Elevates any weeknight.

There is a nice compromise here between the old school/Old World style, and abundance of fruit, which results in a nice and gulpable wine with complexity! The notes of black pepper adds intrigue to this very good wine. An excellent value.

Although Puglia has been one of Italy's largest zones for the cultivation of grapes, it's only recently become known for quality wine production. Cantele has been at the forefront of this movement and when we recently tasted their 2013 Salice Salentino Riserva, it was met with a unanimous thumbs up from our staff! This red is brimming with fragrant dark plum, raspberry, dried herbs, tea and spice while offering delicious fruit, mild tannins and overall freshness throughout. This is the ideal Italian table red and the $10 price tag makes it irresistible.
