2011 Foundi Xinomavro Naoussa

SKU #1272523 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2011 Xinomavro "Naoussea" is the last of this issue's mini-vertical of this "alternative vision" of Xinomavro from Foundi. As always, this is going to be a lighter wine than the Estate, but it seems simply gorgeous. Silky and graceful, it is a very powerful offering this year, bringing down the hammer after an elegant beginning. It has beautiful fruit and it should begin to drink fairly well soon, but it does have that gripping finish. It is quite a lot of wine for the money. It is always easy to underrate this bottling because it seems so elegant compared to bigger and richer wines, but this is certainly a vintage where it will win lots of plaudits. It may yet be entitled to an uptick in score, since it will acquire more complexity as it ages, but it is most certainly a super bargain no matter what. (MS) (8/2016)

- We have the Greeks to thank for introducing wine into Italy and France. And while the legacy of ancient Greek culture lives on, little recognition is given to its modern-day contributions to the wine industry. From the Peloponnese in the south, to Macedonia and Epirus in the north, and islands like Crete, Samos and Santorini, fine wine is once again being made and most of it from indigenous grape varieties not grown in other countries. Styles range from hearty, rustic reds to crisp, neutral whites and heavenly dessert wines. Click for a list of bestselling items from Greece.
