2015 Toreta "Verhunsko Premium" Posip Island of Korcula
Like most single-owner Croatian wineries, the story of Toreta on Korcula is all about a family history of winemaking that stopped during Communism and is now producing again. In this case, the man at the helm is the young Frano Banicevic, who has begun to run the winery that his great-grandfather built at the turn of the 20th century. Like most of the new generation in Croatia, he is full of ideas. Unlike his predecessors, Frano is keenly aware of how much label design affects the decision of the consumer, and has completely modernized the bottles' look. But, the one thing that really doesn't change is the family's commitment to producing good wines. The importer's tasting notes: "All of the Toreta wines are fruitful without being overly primary and are intensely mineral and textural. This premium Pošip is the best example of this balance. Pošip can often produce a lot of sugars on the vine and result in some of the biggest and fullest-bodied whites in Dalmatia. When it is grown and handled correctly, however, like this 2015, it can keep these powerful lush flavors but remain incredibly light on its feet. Pungent and unique it is the perfect refreshment for the sun-drenched beaches of Korcula. Naturally appropriate for sea-fare and or pork smothered in Mediterranean herbs. One regional favorite is ravioli stuffed with local goat cheese."
