2013 Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

SKU #1272388 92 points Vinous

Bright ruby. Assertively perfumed aromas of fresh black and blue fruits, spicecake and garrigue, and suggestions of cola and woodsmoke. Sappy and seamless on the palate, offering deeply concentrated boysenberry, black raspberry and floral pastille flavors that become spicier and more energetic with air. Supple tannins build on the tenacious finish, which shows outstanding clarity and resonating spiciness. (JR) (4/2016)

Features a hearty core of black currant, fig and blackberry fruit inlaid with prominent tobacco and chestnut leaf notes that impart a decidedly old-school feel. Shows plenty of flesh and drive through the finish, which has a tarry underpinning. Should unwind in the cellar. Best from 2018 through 2028. 360 cases made. (JM) (11/2015)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Similar in style to the traditional cuvee, yet with a tad more concentration, the outstanding 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes (70% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Mourvèdre) reveals a darker ruby color to go with old school notes of ground Provençal herbs, leather, mineral and darker berry fruit. Medium plus-bodied, firm, and closed on the palate yet with solid mid-palate depth, give it a year or two and drink bottle through 2025. This family run estate covers just under 100 acres located mostly in the northern part of the appellation. From this, they make two whites and up to three reds. Today, the wines are made by Alexander Favier, and while I wasn’t able to taste his 2014s (in red), he made two rock solid Châteauneuf du Papes in 2013. (JD) (10/2015)

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. - Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
