2013 Chante Cigale Châteauneuf-du-Pape (1.5L)

SKU #1272385 91 points Vinous

Deep red. Fresh, mineral-tinged red and dark berry scents are given depth by suggestions of licorice and cola. Sappy raspberry and boysenberry flavors show very good depth and pick up a suave lavender pastille nuance on the back half. Concentrated yet lively, delivering strong thrust and smooth, even tannins that build steadily through a long, floral-dominated finish. (JR) (4/2016)

Jancis Robinson

Bright crimson. Firm and substantial with more obvious tannin than most but sufficient (just) fruit too. Not that sweet. Racy, food wine. Cool overall. (JR) (10/2014)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Showing nicely in the vintage, the 2013 Châteauneuf du Pape offers attractive notes of blackberries, crushed rocks, leather and wild herbs to go with a medium-bodied, balanced feel on the palate. It shows the austere edge that’s common in the vintage, but it has a classic feel and will drink well for 10-12 years. The blend here is 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre and 5% Cinsault that was raised mostly in concrete tank, yet with 30% in a combination of demi-muid and barrels. (JD) (10/2015)

K&L Notes

Chante Cigale means singing cicada. The property has been in the family since the 19th century and is currently run by Alexandre Favier, who assumed the reins at the ripe old age of 20! The domaine is planted to 40 ha of red and 5 ha of white on 45 different parcels throughout the appellation. The red is made with 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 10% Mourvèdre, and 5% Cinsault using native yeasts and matured in a mix of foudres, tanks, and a small amount of new and used barrels.

Rhone Blends

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. Click for a list of bestselling items from all of France.

- Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
