2016 Bruery Terreux / Fess Parker "Confession" Sour Blonde Ale w/ Riesling Grapes, California (750ml)
*Top 25 Beers of 2016* Gotta love it when a brewery and a winery can come together to make something beautiful, and this is certainly a selection sure to please most on either side of the beer versus wine line. A barrel-aged sour ale (brewed in part by the Fess Parker team) blended and fermented with juice pressed from Fess Parker's Riesling grapes (harvested in part by The Bruery team), this is truly collaboration at its finest. A slightly hazy, light gold color, with brilliant little bubbles that stream from the center of the glass, it opens with bright, vinous aromas of tart grape, firm apricot, underripe peach, barnyard and fresh-cut grass. The medium-bodied palate offers moderate carbonation and a seam of acidity that work in harmony to lift the stone-fruit tones and enliven the finish. While this is perfectly drinkable now, some cellaring will allow the tart, lactic notes to mellow a bit and additional complexities to develop. (LB)
From the brewery: "Confession is a true collaborative effort between the wine and beer world. A variation of our sour blonde ale, brewed in part by Fess Parker Winery, was blended and fermented with juice pressed from Parker's Riesling grapes, harvested in part by The Bruery team. The result is remarkable. Not quite beer, not quite wine. Fragrant fruit flavors warm the nose, infiltrated by a slight funk from the wild yeast. The first sip is reminiscent of a dry, white wine, but everything changes upon further examination as the flavors marinate and reveal themselves with each gulp."
