2014 Bründlmayer Käferberg Grüner Veltliner Kamptal Reserve (1.5L) (Previously $140)

SKU #1271602 94 points Wine Enthusiast

White pepper is already signaled on the nose, on the palate it keeps fizzing amid crushed herbs and yeasty, salty tanginess. The fruit for now remains in the background, but ripe pear is ready to burst forth. This is a quintessential Grüner, full of focus and direction without forgetting the all-important charm. Lovely now but will be even better after 2018. (AK) (3/2016)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Bründlmayer's 2014 Grüner Veltliner Käferberg 1ÖTW possesses smoky speck and ripe fruit aromas on the clear and pure, nicely intense and deep nose. This opens to a clear, intense and elegant palate that is full-bodied, firmly structured and very salty; it reveals an expressively mineral finish with citrus flavors in the aftertaste. An impressive and really characterful Käferberg! (SR) (11/2015)

Jancis Robinson

Crystalline rocks, clay marl. Singing with citrus and green fruit and a delicate peppery, stony aroma. Much more peppery on the palate, with great depth of peppery texture. Crisp, concentrated, deep and long, with a creamy richness on the finish. Just enough concentration for harmony. Stony finish. 17.5/20 points (JH) (8/2015)

Scents and flavors of lima bean inform you that this can be from no other grape. Melon-rind bitterness, the piquancy of freshly milled grains and overt stoniness all pull things in a somewhat austere direction, but there is an admirable retention of primary apple and lime juiciness. And even though hints of lanolin and resin from the barrel still cling to the finish, accompanied by alkaline and invigorating white-pepper notes, it delivers considerable refreshment. Expect this to improve over the next several years. (DS) (9/2015)

Gruner Veltliner

- Grüner Veltliner is the most widely planted grape variety in Austria, making up about a third of all the vineyard land in the country, according to importer extraordinaire Terry Thiese. The varietal has definitely increased in popularity of the past few years, as sommeliers and wine directors loaded their lists with this spicy white because it pairs well with so many things. Its bouquet has been described as floral, tending to toward musky, with hints of peppery greens, lentils, citrus and red fruit with a distinctive mineral quality. In the mouth the wine can be broad or precise, but is almost always distinguished by bracing acidity and flavors that mirror the nose. A notoriously good ager, you can drink GrüVes in their youth, or let them evolve in complexity in your cellar.

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure. Click for a list of bestselling items from Austria.
