2014 Turley "Ueberroth" Paso Robles Zinfandel

 From one of the more famous Turley vineyards (planted in 1885), the 2014 Zinfandel Ueberroth Vineyard comes from a site just down the street from the James Berry Vineyard of Justin Smith and his beloved Saxum Winery. It tips the scales at a whopping 16.1% natural alcohol. This is another killer Zinfandel with terrific minerality, focus and precision, but with thick, rich, blueberry and black raspberry flavors, a full-bodied mouthfeel, and a stunningly long finish. This is a profound example of Zinfandel at its best and another compelling reason why Larry Turley and his staff have, for more than two decades, made some of the most prodigious Zinfandels in California. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. All told there are seven Zinfandels from Napa Valley, ranging from Atlas Peak in the south, to Howell Mountain in mid-valley, to the estate vineyard just north of St. Helena. Zinfandel

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
