2012 Honorío Rubio "Lías Finas" Blanco Rioja

SKU #1269822

Honorío Rubio is a Riojano white wine specialist. In a land best known for its incredibly age-worthy reds, among many die-hards out there it is undoubtedly the traditional whites which represent Rioja's finest and most original wines. These days, outside of Lopez de Heredia (whose whites are increasingly difficult to find) and the odd older bottles of Ygay Blanco, traditional white Rioja is tough to find. That's why we are so excited to be selling the wines of our newest DI producer, Honorío Rubio. Based in the high altitude Rioja Alta village of Cordovín, Honorío Rubio has spectacular Viura and Malvasa vine holdings, planted in poor limestone soils, and chooses to turn them into classic, traditional white Rioja. Lias Finas reminds me a bit of a less oaky, more steely and Burgundian Viña Gravonia. Mineral, saline, yellow fruited and somewhere at the crossroads of Roulot, Equipo Navazos Manzanilla and a bygone era of oak aged Rioja whites. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish & Portuguese wine buyer)

If, like me, you're a fan of Lopez de Heredia's white Riojas, you absolutely must try Honorio Rubio's brilliant Lias Finas. The aromatics alone -- sandalwood, Meyer lemon, vanilla, saline -- are stunning. Made of 100% Viura from Rioja Alta, this wine is aged for 16 months on the lees giving it incredible depth and a lush, creamy texture. You'd expect a wine this rich to be heavy, but Lias Finas is so lit from within by acidity that it feels almost effortless. Easily one of the best and most exciting wines I've tasted this year (and we taste A LOT here). Be advised: this is not a "crowd-pleaser." It is heady and exotic. It is not shy. It is distinctive in the truest and best sense of the word.

Remember the '05 Lopez de Heredia Vina Gravonia we had last year? Well this is it's twin brother who no one ever told you existed. Classic funky, petrol-ish, waxy, chamomile scents with notes of toasted oats, lemon and green apple on the palate. This is an awesomely nerdy wine that you should endeavor into.

I love this traditional tasting, tasty white Rioja from Honorio Rubio. Given the incredible terroir in his old vine yards, as well as the wine's careful elaboration, you are not going to find a more soulful, traditional white Rioja than this. High toned citrus fruits combine with a creamy, lees driven roundness and gentle oak notes on this classic, stylish white.
