2015 Domaine de la Réserve d'O "Bilbo" Languedoc

SKU #1269172

Marie and Frederic Chauffray began their career in wine when they took over Fred parent's wine shop in a suburb outside of Paris. They ran the business successfully for many years but Marie always wanted to pursue winemaking. After 8 years of searching they found the perfect terroir in a small vineyard in the hills above the city of Montpellier. Since 2005, they have made wine their way, with respect for nature and following organic and biodynamic principles. The Bilbo represents their everyday wine. It is composed of 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 20% Cinsault. The wine takes its name not from the Hobbit but actually from the village of Bilbao in the Basque country of northern Spain. Marie and Fred are huge fans Basque culture and this wine is meant to go with those kinds foods. Put a faint chill on it and serve with lighter fare. Some meatballs, bacalao, or perhaps an omelette with a little chorizo. (Keith Mabry, K&L Wine Merchants-French Regional Buyer)

This wine pops! It is the most charming most enjoyable from this Domaine. It is serious wine but it should not be take too seriously. Bright dark fruit, hints of spice, easy tannins and fresh acidity. This is a great every day drinker.

The whole line-up of Domaine De La Reserve D'o wines is insane, it is so difficult to pick a favorite, but the' bilbo' may just be my favorite. The idea behind this bottling is to enjoy it with Basque cuisine, a favorite of the owners of the winery, so the bilbo reflects a wine that is light on its feet and bright, to pair with the seaside cuisine of Basque country. With aromas of purple fruit and crushed flowers this wine is gorgeous. Flavors of quince, blackberry and exotic spices dance across the palate. For me this wine is best enjoyed with a slight chill on it.

This is the most value-oriented wine on the Reserve D’O roster, and while I’d be hard-pressed to pick a favorite from these enchanting producers, Bilbo might just edge out the others. There is so much lift here, with heady violet notes up front and complexity through the palate of fresh strawberry and darker plum fruit, and just enough spice on the finish. 2015 feels a bit lusher than previous vintages, but the sprightly acid remains. I took a bottle home after the staff tasting and was impressed to find it showing even better – slightly more floral and velvety – the next day.

Stunning wine from this impeccable producer I must say. It has a very lifted strawberry/berry/petit-fruit-du-bois aromatics, along with a touch of earth bestowing some elegance. It is delicate and yet very complex as well.

I love this wine from our friends at Domaine de La Reserve D’O, Marie and Fred. It’s mostly Grenache which is cold macerated, vinified, and aged in cement vats for a year to preserve freshness. It has great flavors of freshly picked blueberries and plums with a subtle acid finish and a nice lightness. Serve it slightly chilled for the full freshness effect.

For just shy of $18 per bottle this wine is a steal. Easy to drink with just about anything, this medium-bodied red has flavors of fresh dark fruit. I taste dark cherries and plum the most with a subtle hint of spice and pepper. Definitely not a fruit overload but just enough to give it some character. I would buy a case to last the whole year, lots of value here!
