2015 Ryme "Hers - Las Brisas Vineyard" Carneros Vermentino

SKU #1269086 89-90 points Vinous

The 2015 Vermentino - Hers - Green Las Brisas Vineyard, tasted from barrel, offers lovely depth and nuance. Expressive floral notes meld into a core of varietal green orchard fruit in this pretty, refreshing Vermentino. The 2015 was done in a combination of stainless steel and neutral oak. Ryan Glaab has taken the big step of leaving his post as assistant winemaker at Wind Gap to focus on Ryme, the label he runs with his wife, Megan. Over the last few years, my overriding impression has been that these wines are inconsistent. Then again, managing multiple commitments is not easy. Hopefully that will be less of an issue now that Ryan Glaab can focus on Ryme 100% of the time. Ryme's move into their own facility is an important step in the right direction. (AG) (1/2016)

K&L Notes

Vermentino in Pinot Noir country, thanks to the tireless experimentation of Francis Mahoney of Mahoney Vineyards. Las Brisas, named for the breezes that cool vines from the San Pablo Bay, is one cool-climate hotbed of clones and varieties inviting winemakers like the proprietors of Ryme.

United States

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. - With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year. Specific Appellation:

- Just across the Golden Gate from San Francisco, Carneros is kept cool by Bay breezes and thick fog, and has long been famous for cool-climate pinot noir, chardonnay and sparkling wine based on the two varietals. Warmer pockets have proved interesting and promising homes for syrah, cabernet and merlot.
