2015 Neyers "304" Sonoma County Chardonnay

Influenced by his experiences making wine in Europe as well as from two decades working with the respected wine importer Kermit Lynch, Bruce Neyers was an early adapter of the hands-on, natural and organic winemaking approach in the Napa Valley when he and his wife Barbara founded Neyers in 1992. His point of reference for Chardonnay are the great Burgundies of France. "After you try a Chablis from Raveneau or a Burgundy from Méo-Camuzet," he tells us in an Uncorked interview from April of 2011, "you have a frame of reference, an objective to seek." The 304 Chardonnay named after the Grade 304 stainless steel it is fermented and aged it. The wine also sees continuous lees contact, making the resulting wine rich and complex, while also maintaining a feeling of liveliness.

This is a natural beauty of California Chardonnay. By that I mean that it is not hiding behind any toasty oak. Ripe clean fruit that backed with just the right amount of leesy richness.

In a world of woody Chardonnay, this un-oaked version delivers a wonderful departure from the norm, while still bringing the purity and weight that the varietal is supposed to have. A nose of white peach and orchard fruits is accompanied by just a hint of nutty richness. In the mount this is softly textured, but from the fruit, not heavy with wood influence, give the wine a purity and freshness that is all wine. White peaches and toasted almonds blend nicely together on the mid palate, really great performance for a $20 bottle of Chardonnay.

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. - Second in fame only to Napa, this "other" valley offers just about every climate and topography imaginable. From its cool and fog-enshrouded coastal regions on the far west, to the sprawling Alexander Valley on the boarder of Napa and the many little dips and peaks in between, Sonoma has been a vital wine-grape-growing region since the mid 1800s.
