 This wine emphasizes Zinfandel’s gentle tannins (rather than the more rustic tannins of thick-skinned mixed blacks, with which Zin is so often blended). 92 point sub $20 Zinfandel? Heck yeah, absolutely deserved. In fact it is with a bit of hesitation that I see that score, one of our favorite wines year in and year out, hopefully it remembers the little people that were there from the beginning. This Zin grown back up in the Chiles canyon is a bit of a throwback, not jammy and bold, but concentrated and deep. Tannins are present and off a supple back bone to the wine, pure notes of raspberries and plum make up a red fruited core. The fruit is complimented by a pinch of fresh cracked black, and hints of vanilla with dried plums. After a few sips of this you forget that this is still on of the best deals to be found in Napa Valley Zin.

- The bid to name Zinfandel California's "State Varietal" may have failed, but this red wine grape, grown extensively in California since the mid-1800s, is grown in few other places in the world. Sadly, much of what's cultivated today is planted where it's too hot and flat. But when planted to well-drained, hillside vineyards that are warm but not too hot, like those in Sonoma County's Dry Creek Valley and Amador County in the Sierra Foothills, Zinfandel can produce wines with plenty of character. High in natural alcohol and tannin, grown carefully it can be rich and complex, with dark fruit berry fruit and peppery spice. The most known example of Zinfandel outside of California is Italy's Primitivo, which can be similar in style, but is often a bit lighter and less alcoholic than West Coast examples.
