2012 Chateau Les Valentines Côtes de Provence Rouge (Previously $20)

The winegrowing estate of Chateau les Valentines is more than a century old. The estate originally brought their grapes to the local cooperative, but when Gilles and Pascale Pons took over in 1997, they decided to make their own wine. They built a modern winery and called the domaine "Les Valentines" after their children, Valentin and Clémentine. Château les Valentines now covers approximately 100 acres. The red is a near equal parts blend of Mourvedre, Cabernet Sauvignon, Grenache, Syrah and Carignan. Ripe but balanced flavors of cassis, blackberry and exotic spices lead the charge with beautifully polished tannins on the finish. (Keith Mabry, K&L Rhone buyer)

The 2012 Ch√Ęteau Les Valentines Rouge is a near equal parts blend of Mourvedre, Grenache, Syrah, Cinsault and Cabernet Sauvignon. Ripe but balanced flavors of cassis, blackberry and exotic spices lead the charge, with beautifully polished tannins on the finish. Serve with a little Mediterranean chicken stew.

The largest appellation in the region is the Cotes de Provence that spans 49,600 acres of land in and around Marseilles. Thirteen different varietals are grown in this appellation with the most important grapes being Carignan, Cinsault, Grenache, and Mouvedre. While much of the production is dry rose, there are many more serious wines being made from the area. Some of the most important smaller appellations within Provence include Bandol, Coteaux d'Aix-en-Provence, and Coteaux Varois.
