2013 Onx Wines "Mad Crush" Templeton Gap Red Blend

SKU #1258520 91 points Vinous

Opaque purple. Aromas of ripe dark berries, cola, lavender and peppery spices, with a hint of smokiness in the background. At once juicy and seamless, offering energetic black raspberry and allspice flavors that tighten up on the back half. Fine-grained tannins give structure to a long, sweet finish that echoes the berry and cola notes. Drinking window: 2019 - 2024. (JR) (6/2015)

91 points Wine Enthusiast

From a winery known for atypical blends, this mix of 43% Grenache, 39% Tempranillo, 9% Syrah and 9% Mourvèdre offers intriguing baked red cherry, rare beef, cinnamon stick and Christmas spices on the nose. The ripe but woody palate starts strong on elderberry fruit before chaparral underbrush and leather elements lead into the finish. (MK) (6/2016)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2013 Mad Crush has an almost Zinfandel character in its lifted, slightly volatile bouquet of plums, violets, bramble and spice. A blend of 43% Grenache, 39% Tempranillo, 9% Syrah and the rest Mourvedre, it's medium to full-bodied, has plenty of fruit and a clean finish. It's an enjoyable red to drink over the coming 4-5 years. (JD) (8/2015)

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. - With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year. Specific Appellation:

Paso Robles

- Located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this inland AVA enjoys a sunny and hot growing period while its seaside neighbors hang in the fog. Zinfandel is the traditional red grape of choice, though cabernet, chardonnay, and Rhône varietals are gaining favor. Most are made in a fruit-forward, early drinking style.
