2013 Viña Ijalba Maturana Blanca Rioja

SKU #1256443 Jancis Robinson

Very rare, rescued variety (only 2 ha exist). Ambient yeast for barrel fermentation, where it is aged on lees for four months. Organic fruit. Initially a herbal aroma, creamy too, some green apple and citrus. Stony, even dusty/chalky, on the palate, dry, a slight grip but filled out by deep citrus flavours that become more herbal on the finish. Distinctive, crisp and persistent. I imagine it would age for a few years too, though I have not tasted wines with bottle age to be confident. (JH) (11/2014)
