2014 L'Aventure "Estate Cuvée" Paso Robles Red Blend

SKU #1256369 98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

A massive, gorgeously rich and decadent version of this cuvee, the 2014 Estate Cuvee (50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Syrah and 15% Petit Verdot) is reminiscent of a 2005 Pomerol with its huge bouquet of cassis, toasted spice, graphite, damp earth and leafy herb aromas and flavors. Thick, full-bodied, unctuous and palate-saturating, yet still with purity and grace, it's an insanely good Bordeaux blend (or close) from Paso Robles that will have two decades of overall longevity. One of the reference point estates in Paso Robles is unquestionably Stephan Asseo's l'Aventure. Located just off of highway 46, in the middle of the appellation, Stephan now producers six red cuvees: The entry level Optimus based on Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and Petit Verdot; The Cote a Cote based on Grenache, with smaller parts Mourvedre and Syrah; The Demoiselles based largely on Mourvedre; the Cuvee Chloe, named after Stephan's daughter and always blend of 70/30 Syrah and Grenache; The Estate Cuvee based on Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon (there's always a small portion of Petit Verdot)... Glass-staining ruby. Assertively perfumed aromas of dark berry preserves, Asian spices and candied rose develop a vibrant mineral quality in the glass. Spicy and sharply focused on the palate, offering concentrated red and black currant, cherry and floral pastille flavors of outstanding clarity and power. Closes sappy, spicy and extremely long, with velvety tannins adding shape and gentle grip. (JR) (9/2016)

The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world. - With the explosive growth that California's wine industry has seen the past several years, it's easy to view winemaking and grape growing in the Golden State as a recent phenomenon. And while it's true that California's viticultural history is brief compared to several European countries, this state's roots date back well over 200 years. Due to the enormous response to California wine within the United States and worldwide, there are thousands of excellent and diverse wines being produced within the state each year. Paso Robles

- Located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this inland AVA enjoys a sunny and hot growing period while its seaside neighbors hang in the fog. Zinfandel is the traditional red grape of choice, though cabernet, chardonnay, and Rhône varietals are gaining favor. Most are made in a fruit-forward, early drinking style.
