2014 Gen del Alma "Otra Piel" Red Blend Gualtallary

SKU #1250890 96 points Decanter

Seductive nose, very perfumed, with intense red fruit characters of raspberries and cherries and a fresh mineral and herbal touch. Very elegant, light, yet tasty with notes of fresh strawberry coulis. Pleasant texture, fresh acidity and fine tannins, an exquisite red wine, brilliantly executed. (Decanter World Wine Awards)

This is a ringer for a top Chinon. A crazy blend of malbec, cab franc and pinot noir. And it's made in concrete amphoras that are buried in the same vineyard. Very crazy wine. Full body, silky and rich with so much plum, spice and stone. Very long and flavorful. Bright acidity. Drink now. (5/2016)

The 2014 Otra Piel Tinto is an unusual blend of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon that fermented together in an amphorae buried in the middle of a field built with bricks and in egg-shaped cement vats where some 10% Pinot Noir was added later. The wine was bottled unoaked. It fermented using the ambient yeasts and with minimal intervention. The nose is quite ripe showing notes of plums, skins and something earthy and organic. The elegant palate is electric, has high acidity and lots of tension. This is both elegant and wild with aromatic herb aromas, rockrose and rosemary. There is maturity and tension here. This wine should age well. 2,700 bottles were filled, the capacity of the amphora. (LG) (5/2015)

Gen del Alma (G d'A as it is appears on the label) is a project of Gerardo Michelini and his wife Andrea Mufatto. Their goal is to showcase the unique, calcareous terroir of Gualtallary (within the Tupungato sub-zone of the Uco Valley) and to make very fresh, acid focused, mineral wines. To do so they experiment with concrete eggs (designed by their engineer father and fabricated locally), older barrels and in this case, a very large clay amphora which they made themselves. Otra Piel is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir, all grown on a single vineyard in Tupungato. The wine is aged in amphora and then in bottle prior to release. It shows a combination of intense mixed berry fruit and some brawn and heft while retaining its lively, engaging acidity. A rare peek into a serious Cab Franc blend that never sees the inside of a new or used barrel. Delicious.

- Argentina is regarded as one of the most dynamic wine-producing nations in the world, and possibly the most important wine-producing region in South America. Only four countries in the world produce more wine than Argentina. Considerable investments (much of which has come from famous French, Italian and California wine producers) have been made in new vineyards and winemaking technology in the past several years, which along with recent plantings of more premium varieties of grapes, has made Argentina much more competitive internationally. The Mendoza region is the most important region in Argentina's wine industry. And Malbec, among other Bordeaux varietals grown here, reigns supreme.
