2012 Moric Reserve Blaufränkisch Burgunland

SKU #1249310 90 points Vinous

Deep ruby. Dried plum, tobacco and a hint of dark chocolate give the nose a distinctly herbal impression. Juicy and rich on the palate, with a flavor of fully ripe blackberry and an opulent impression of sweet extract nicely leavened by robust, well-integrated tannis. With its inner balance, the 2012 Reserve is more transparent and elegant than the 2011 edition. (JP) (9/2015)

90 points Wine & Spirits

A blend of fruit from both Neckenmarkt and Lutzmannsburg, this is robust and full, the fruit succulent and blue. While the alcohol is a little peppery, the fruit remains the motor, powered by invisible yet cleansing acidity. Put it away for a few years to settle down; then serve it with a rich, paprika-scented beef stew. (5/2016)

K&L Notes

This blend of lots from parcels in Neckenmarkt and Lutzmannsburg brings to the basic cherry and raspberry flavors a truly fetching component of cherry compote, while floating a whiff of sage leaves and fresh bread-dough on the nose. Very beautifully polished, the texture falls halfway between silk and satin.

Austria

- Austria is a well-respected wine-growing region in Europe. Yet, even though they make about a third the volume of wine as Germany, not many of these fine bottles make it to the shelves of American wine merchants or restaurants. Lucky for us, their anonymity has translated into incredible value from simple, everyday whites to exquisite dessert wines. Austria shares many grape varieties with Germany—Riesling is king here, too. But the style of Austrian whites is much dryer and more potent. Grüner Veltliner is Austria's second-most-important varietal and makes whites of great versatility and pleasure. Click for a list of bestselling items from Austria.
