2013 Carlisle "Two Acres" Russian River Valley Red Blend

 One of my favorite wines from Officer is the 2013 Two Acres, an intriguing blend dominated by Mourvèdre (72%), and the rest Carignan, Petite Sirah, Peloursin, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. Mike Officer has always done an amazing job with this tiny two-acre vineyard planted in 1910, which he calls the products from “lip-smacking delicious.” I can’t really improve upon that description. Using indigenous yeast fermentation and only about 50% new oak, the 2013 Two Acres is a remarkably elegant, Mediterranean-styled wine that is reminiscent of a stylish Châteauneuf du Pape, for lack of a better comparison. The wine has loads of raspberry fruit, vague hints of spice box, pepper and maybe beef, but the floweriness and sweet purity (the wine is totally dry, but the 15% alcohol adds lots of glycerin to the texture) makes for a seductive wine.  Compact and a touch racy, with smoky dried cherry aromas and focused flavors of boysenberry, pepper beef and grilled herb. The tannins are big but ripe. Mourvèdre, Carignane, Petite Sirah, Peloursin, Syrah and Alicante Bouschet. (Web-2016)

- Among Sonoma County's northernmost appellations, the Alexander Valley AVA acts as a gateway to neighboring Napa to the east and Mendocino to the north. It is a sprawling appellation, with pockets of distinct microclimates and soils, and as such, is home to a variety of wine grapes and styles. Nearly everything grows in the Alexander Valley, though Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay are the most widely planted grapes. The Russian River Valley lies to the south of Alexander Valley, and is marked by much cooler temperatures and frequently heavy fog. The Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grown here are some of the state's finest and most sought-after.
