2012 Torrin "The Maven" Paso Robles Grenache

 The 2012 The Maven was tasted as a final blend and is 91% Grenache and 9% Syrah that was aged in 30% new puncheons. Coming from two south-facing plots, it has classic kirsch and blackberry fruit to go with plenty of chalky minerality, wild herbs and hints of pepper on the nose. This all comes together nicely on the palate, and this full-bodied, concentrated barrel sample has lots of tannic grip and a big finish. Like the 2011, it is an age-worthy Grenache that will benefit from short-term cellaring and have 10-15 years of longevity. (JD)  (10/2004)

 Deep, bright ruby. Ripe raspberry, cherry and smoky Indian spices on the highly perfumed nose. Densely packed and alluringly sweet, offering vibrant red berry and cherry liqueur flavors and a hint of candied rose. Gains weight and expands with air, finishing silky, spicy and long, with an intense raspberry note. This is a striking example of New World Grenache, admittedly with Syrah lending a helping hand. Grenache

- Fat, ripe and rich with ample fruit and vibrant acidity, wines made from Grenache are easy to love. While its origins are still under dispute - some suggest Spain, where it is called Garnacha, while others say it came first from Sardinia, where it is called Cannonau - it is inarguably one of the most planted varietals in the world. A hearty grape, Grenache does well in hot, dry regions and its sturdy stalk also makes it well-suited to withstand blustery conditions like the Provençal Mistral. It ripens at relatively high sugar levels, which translates to higher potential alcohol in the wines it produces. Grenache may be most famous in the Southern Rhône areas such as Châteauneuf-du-Pape and Gigondas where it has long been an important component of delicious blends. But it's also the source of the crisp rosés from Tavel, Lirac and Provence, and age-worthy vins doux naturels like Rivsaltes and Banyuls. Grenache is also found in large swaths of northeastern Spain, in Navarre, in Rioja, where it plays a supporting role in blends with Tempranillo, and in the distinctive wines of Priorat. The grape was once the most widely planted varietal in Australia, though Shiraz and Cabernet have overtaken it. In California, Grenache plantings have dwindled from their heyday in the San Joaquin Valley, but it is starting to see a resurgence, albeit in smaller plantings, where other Rhône varietals thrive.

- Located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this inland AVA enjoys a sunny and hot growing period while its seaside neighbors hang in the fog. Zinfandel is the traditional red grape of choice, though cabernet, chardonnay, and Rhône varietals are gaining favor. Most are made in a fruit-forward, early drinking style.
