2011 Quinta do Popa Tinta Roriz Douro

SKU #1241837 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2011 Tinta Roriz, identical to the vinification method for the winery's Touriga Nacional reviewed this issue, was aged for 9 months in French oak, only 40% new, the rest a mixture of second and third use. This is lovely. Refined, graceful and beautifully balanced on opening, this is a wine that caresses the palate, finishes with flavor and never seems to have a hair out of place. That said, some time and aeration really improves this wine. With air, it fleshed out and showed more power and intensity on the finish. It became more impressive, a Tinta Roriz that takes no prisoners. Give it a little time to settle down, though. It will likely round into form closer to 2017-2019, whether or not approachable sooner. Very attractive modern label. Dark purplish crimson, youthful looking. Red-fruited and fragrant. Firm and dry on the palate showcasing the fruit but with those fine dry tannins of the Douro increasing the overall freshness. Not a huge amount of concentration on the mid palate but all the more drinkable for that. Good length. (JH) (12/2014)

K&L Notes

While the powerful Touriga Nacional grape continues to attract a lot of the attention, and Touriga Franca has its vocal backers, I have heard of few people making a strong case for Roriz, otherwise known in Spain as Tempranillo. Quinta do Papa makes a beautiful example, intensely fruited and well balanced. They are justifiably proud of this bottling; it might be the best single varietal Tinta Roriz in Portugal. Quinta do Popa had its first harvest in 2007, and the winemaking is overseen by Luis Pato, one of the more famous winemakers in Portugal. The 2011 Quinta do Popa Tinta Roriz shows gorgeous, dark color with intense aromas of huckleberry, pine, and wood smoke. Although this is a big wine, with plenty of fruit and alcohol, the structure of tannin and acidity shapes and highlights the bulk, creating a well-integrated whole: tangy, rich and full.
