Back in August of last year I was approached by Anne Marie Coyne-Kashkooli, the daughter of Thomas Coyne, she was curious if we were interested in buying a large lot from her Father's winery that is no longer in business, the Thomas Coyne Winery. To hear that name was a blast from the past for me. For years before I came to K&L I sold the wines out of a little shop in Berkeley that I helped run and they were always wildly popular with our customers. They were wines of zero pretense, full of charm and ease so I was all ears. Turned out Thomas has passed away and as the moving force of the winery the family decided not to continue the business. I hadn't had the wines in years, Thomas loved making wine and finding great vineyards in not so famous areas but he wasn't much for pounding the pavement and selling his wines outside of the winery. Tasting the wines again I was reminded of why they were always so successful, they were great table wines with enough fruit and exuberance to drink as cocktail wines, they were spot on for their varietals and they has so much verve and unassuming beauty. So Anne Marie and I worked through all of the details, and we've selected a handful of wines that we think our customers will love. Classic California Merlot for $10. That's right, ten bucks! This isn't a big, manipulated, six figure case production wine made in an industrial warehouse. This is a wine full of black cherry and berry, with nice acid, mineral components and a touch of oak made at a family winery in Livermore that maxed out a 5,000 cases a year. This is special occasion-quality wine at a weekday wine price. Load up while you can!

We all know that Merlot still is a bit of varietal non grata in the United States but I have no idea why? I mean, can a quote from a movie 12 years ago, that is ironically debunked throughout the movie, really have that much power and reach in our nation of wine drinkers? I surely hope not. Is it because so many Merlots for so long were just insipid or boring at best? Possibly. So I submit to all those haters, or naysayers, this Thomas Coyne Merlot. At a paltry $10 this is one Merlot that has it all: lush blue fruits, coffee grounds, brightness and cut while having a soft, seamless texture, graphite and wet gravel and a touch of lilac. With a bit more Right Bank Bordeaux influence than the bombast of California, this Merlot is something that I found myself drawn to, and I think our customers will feel the same way.

Five to six years ago I visited this really small producer in the Livermore Valley and found his limited selectionof varietals to be incredibly well made productions and very tasty. Unfortunately, they couldn’t sell any of their wines to K&L because their productions were so small; they sold strictly from their winery mailing list and tasting room, as well as to local restaurants. Thomas Coyne died recently and his heirs decided to not continue his legacy of small productions and allowed us to virtually buy their entire inventory. I have been making wine since 1974 (there are five families involved in this and we never did get bonded, and have kept it as sort of a co-op type of production), and have made Merlot twice. It is one of my least favorite varietals, other than those from Pomerol and Saint-Emilion (I generally find domestic Merlots to be simple, linear, and uninteresting) and my ego allowed me to believe that in my hands I could duplicate Pomerol and Saint-Emilion. Nada! And, that was back in the mid-90’s and I haven’t made it since. The Coyne 2012 Merlot is an incredible production that I would have loved to reproduce with my productions. Deeply colored, it offers a lovely smell of blackberry fruit with a soft oaky undertone that carries over to a balanced, nicely integrated set of flavors that lead to a long, satisfying finish. Rusty has informed that this may be the first domestic Merlot Gem to in our collection. As a result, I need to bring home a few cases. Don’t miss this Gem. ***** ABV NOT AVAILABLE *****

- A very popular red grape variety found in the great wines of St. Emilion and Pomerol. It is the most planted variety in Bordeaux, and it has also become an extremely fashionable red in many regions including California. Although it has a reputation to be smooth, and easy to drink when young, Merlot is also capable of producing extremely intense wines as well. It is often used as a blending agent with Cabernet Sauvignon.
