 The 2013 L'Evangile is one of the more textured, layered wines of the year. Mocha, cloves, plums and black cherries meld together in a wine with considerable richness and vivid, expressive fruit. The 100% new French oak is impeccably integrated for a wine of this age. Raspberry jam, wild flowers and sweet spices linger on the close. This is a terrific showing, especially for the vintage. The 2013 is 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, brought in from September 27 to early October. (AG)  (4/2014)

 Not shy, with charcoal and bitter cocoa notes, accented by plenty of tobacco details. The core of dark plum, currant paste and fig flavors pulls all the elements together through the finish. A frankly muscular style that is both ambitious and surprisingly successful in this vintage. Best from 2018 through 2028. 2,000 cases made. (JM)  (3/2016)

 This is very agreeable, with raspberry, light vanilla and chocolate character. Medium body with fresh acidity and a clean finish. Very delicious and fun. Delicate.  (4/2014)

 Dark ruby. Intense, pure blackcurrant, gunflint and violet aromas on the precise nose. Then very pure and suave in the mouth, with clean, well-delineated flavors of small dark berries and minerals showing noteworthy persistence. A major success for the year. (IA)  (6/2014)

 87% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc. Plummy, blackcurrant jus, super-fine tannins, a little bit of burnt meat and milk chocolate. Mouthwatering acidity. Demonstrates the leanness of the vintage in terms of structure -- but has full flavour ripeness. Lovely sumptuous mouthfeel. Luxurious feel. There is just a bit of perfume opening up here, giving promise of real complexity. 18/20 points. Drink 2016 to 2026. (RH)  (4/2014)

 The 2013 l'Evangile shows a slightly deeper color as well as more noticeable ripe raspberry and black cherry fruit intermixed with notions of licorice and incense. Again, there is no hint of herbaceousness or tannic astringency in this mid-weight, slightly superficial, but charming, pretty 2013. Consume it over the next 7-8 years. (RP)  (8/2014)

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the M├ędoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
