K&L Notes

We met Marie Chauffray at the Vinifilles tasting in January of 2015 in Montpellier. The Vinifilles (which means "wine girls") is an association of women producers who own and operate their own estates. From growing to winemaking to marketing, they are involved in every aspect of their wineries' success. I was invited by our friend Francoise Antech-Gazeau (our sparkling wine producer from the Limoux) to visit and taste her wines and meet some of her other grower-producer friends. Chauffray's was one of the most impressive wines we tasted at the event, and we immediately struck up a relationship. Marie owned a wine shop but always wanted to pursue growing, so she and her husband Frederic began looking for a vineyard. It took 10 years to find the perfect plot. The vineyard which is planted on limestone gravel is on a unique site 400 meters above sea level in the Terrasses du Larzac sub-region of Languedoc. The farming is certified both Ecocert Organic and Demeter Biodynamic. Representing the best qualities of the estate the "Reserve d'O" is a blend of 45% Grenache, 45% Syrah with 10% Cinsault. Some of the most unique wines you will taste all year. (Keith Mabry, K&L French Regional Buyer)

This wine is something special. It has a sense of place, complexity, nice texture, real depth and is organic/biodynamic. While reasonably priced this wine will repay medium term cellaring, but it really just wants to be enjoyed slowly. Let this wine open up and savor it with friends.

Domaine de la Reserve D'O is everything I look for in a winery. It's a small, family run production with ceaseless passion for quality, a deep respect for nature and, of course, affordability! These attributes manifest themselves in their Terrasses du Larzac, a beautiful blend of Syrah, Grenache and Cinsault, co-fermented and aged for two years in cement vats. It has a deep, dark ruby color with flavors of raspberry, dark currants, cocoa and leather. It's framed by beautiful herbal notes and finishes with bright acidity. This is an exclusive direct import not to be missed!
Top Value!

The workhorse wine if you will...The Reserve d'O is representative of the great wines and the future potential that is coming out of the Languedoc. Rich red and black berry fruit, this is streamlined, elegant and deep. So much going on here, that just one evening may not be enough to get into the complexities here. I found that tasting this wine over the course of a couple of days continues to yield more and more. This is world-class and under $20!

This is a fascinating and expressive wine. I have tasted it twice. The first time was directly just after the bottle was opened. The wine was bright and fresh with nice, dark fruit flavors but was not sweet or too fruity. After the wine was open for a few hours there were seductive aromas of summer fruits with floral hints. In the mouth it was deep with dark fruit flavors and a hint of earth and minerals. In either case, whether consumed immediately and after decanting, the Reserve D'O is complex and delicious.

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! This GREAT wine has deep, dark red fruits, some cola notes and great density and spiciness. A huge favorite of our staff tasting of about 35 wines two days ago. The price is simply fantastic for a wine of this caliber. In fact, ALL of the Domaine De La Reserve are over-performers and should NOT be missed!

Finally! The 2013 vintage of Domaine de la Reserve d'O's "La Réserve d'O" has landed and once again, it's fantastic. The 2012 vintage of the La Réserve d'O garnered 92 points from Robert Parker and I expect this year to meet or surpass it. It shows subtle notes of smoked meat and black olive but dark cherry, blackberry, licorice and spices lead the charge on the palate. The finish is clean and layered. I'll be following these wines for a long time to come.
