2013 Stolpman "Estate" Ballard Canyon Syrah
The 2013 Syrah Estate offers up the typical Stolpman Syrah palette of dark flavors, but with a bit more cut and overall energy from the greater diurnal shifts that characterized the growing season. Graphite, smoke, black cherry, plum and menthol are all pushed forward in this tasty, richly textured Syrah from Stolpman. (AG)
**Two Stars and a Good Value** Once again a Syrah that tempers its ripeness and very deep and precise fruit with a careful winemaking hand, Stolpman's Estate Grown version is a rich and well-polished wine whose potency is matched with prettiness. It is full in body and supple in feel with neatly placed tannins and a touch of acidy brightness, and it too is certain to gain over the next half-dozen years providing that one can resist its undeniable youthful charm.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The largest production cuvee, the 2013 Syrah Estate is a terrific value that has loads to love. Medium-bodied, fresh and elegant, with notable yet fine tannin, it gives up pretty notes of blackberry, ground pepper, chalky minerality and smoked meats. Buy it by the case and drink it over the coming 4-5 years. (JD)
Boisterous fruit shows on the nose of this wine from the heart of the newish appellation, presented in a specially made Ballard Canyon bottle. Olallieberry jam gains nuance from pulverized purple flowers. The palate begins with straightforward purple fruits then evolves into potpourri, incense and dried berries. (MK)
Half whole cluster. Fermented and aged in concrete. Dusty, dark fruit aromatics and flavour with accents of violet and spice with light herbal notes. Nice purity. Stimulating, energetic palate. Tactile tannins. Pleasing mouthfeel. Nice tension. Really delicious. (ECB)
