2013 Niepoort "Vertente" Tinto Douro
A balanced, fresh style of red with fine tannins, dark berries and hints of hazelnuts. Medium body, delicate tannins and a clean finish. A blend of grape varities from the region. Excellent value for an outstanding Douro red – a real deal.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
The 2013 Vertente is Niepoort's familiar Douro blend, sourced from a combination of younger (with Niepoort, that means about 25 years) and older vines. Startlingly open and expressive, this shows little sign of a problem in this difficult vintage. Exuberant and tasty, it also evolves into something more serious with aeration in the glass, showing more intensity and focus to go with the fine fruit. This is right in line with fine Vertentes in general and it should hold well in the cellar–although it is also approachable on the young side. Give it a year or two to settle in and then it depends on how you like them. (MS)
Not all is sweet in Portugal! Portugal is a great source not only for fine port wines, but for hearty, meaty, dry red table wines with plenty of class and distinction. One of the best wine growing regions in Portugal is the Douro Valley. Producing just as much dry red as it does fortified wine, this region is home to a number of regional varietals that lend these wines a rich depth of spice and savory character not to be found elsewhere. One of the better port houses in the Douro, Niepoort makes some dry wine as well as world-class fortified wines.
