Salvatore Emmolo immigrated from Italy to Rutherford in 1923 and planted vines. Emmolo was a leading supplier to Napa vintners until Cheryl, the third generation, launched Emmolo Wines in 1994. Today, it's in the fourth generation's hands, with fruit still grown on their grandparents' property. The 2014 Sauvignon Blanc shows fresh citrus notes and lively minerality, making it infinitely sippable.

I was surprised, impressed, and quite pleased when I tasted this Sauvignon Blanc from Napa. Despite having been in Napa for almost 100 years you can taste the mineral drive that I associate with many Italian whites. This wine has a lovely nose with white stone fruit and some melon notes, this follows on the palate along with bright acid. The balance and cleanness of the wine actually astonished me, I highly recommend this as a different, but excellent Napa Sauv. Blanc.

Syzygy is one of my favorite oddball words, referring to the perfect astronomical alignment of celestial bodies, as Earth, Moon and Sun. As a wine metaphor, it could express the perfect alignment of vineyard, terroir and winemaker, culminating in the shimmering juice that ends up in your glass. I suppose time, or rather, tradition also plays a role in the creation of such wines, and California being a land of immigrants, carries plenty of history in its myriad topography, soils and vineyards. The Emmolo property dates back to 1923, when Salvatore Emmolo landed in Rutherford and founded a rootstock nursery and winery, where today his great-grand daughter continues to harvest the fruits and produce both sumptuous Merlots and stunning Sauvignon Blancs. The latter is a refreshing, well-crafted version that speaks in delicate tones of orange blossom, white pear and grapefruit while sharing a pleasant mineral note and vibrant acidity to add harmony and cut to the mouthwatering finish. Lovely stuff, and 'syzygistically' well-aligned with you, your palate and what lies on the plate in front of you.

Sauvignon Blanc

- One of the best known "international" varieties originally cultivated in France and considered the parent of, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon's wonderfully distinctive aromatics generate some of wine's most colorful descriptors, among them "cat pee," herbaceous, grassy, citrusy the world over. In France, the apex of Sauvignon Blanc production is the Loire Valley, in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where the terroir expresses itself most beautifully through the grape. Sauvignon Blanc is also the leading white grape varietal in Bordeaux, where it is paired with the fatter, richer Sémillon to varying degrees. Relatively easy to cultivate, though more suited to cool climates, Sauvignon Blanc has made inroads in Europe outside of France, especially in Northeastern Italy's Friuli and Alto Adige, but also on the Slovenian border. These lovely wines are often overshadowed by Sauvignon Blanc's achievements in the New World, namely New Zealand, South Africa and California. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blancs, more conspicuously fruity than most French examples, landed the small island nation on the world wine map in the late-1980s and 1990s. South African Sauvignons are one of the most successful international varieties produced in that country and are often quite elegant and affordable. In California, Robert Mondavi managed to, almost single-handedly, created a market for Sauvignon Blanc by renaming his oak-fermented version Fumé Blanc. While some wineries still use the name, California Sauvignon Blanc has secured its place in the California wine pantheon, particularly those from the Napa Valley. Washington State, Chile and Argentina also have considerable plantings of the grape.
