 Dense and decadent red with dark berry, plum, chocolate, vanilla, liquorice and a suggestion of spicy oak. Very impressive wine from an outstanding vintage where Merlot was the star, at least at a regional level. Fruit flavours are supported by soft, chewy tannins. Approachable now but with obvious cellaring potential. Great value at this price.

 This is impressively fruited on the nose displaying dark plum, blueberry, mixed spice, smoked meat and cedar notes on the nose, followed by a dense palate that is focused and silky with abundance of ripe fruit flavours. The wine offers elegant oak complexity, but the fruit purity is the real star here. At its best: 2016 to 2023.

 A blend of 46% Merlot, 45% Malbec and 9% Cabernet Franc, from the company’s ‘Gimblett’ and ‘Triangle’ vineyards, hand-picked to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 28% new French oak, then a further 6 months on lees in tank. Very full, near saturated black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is elegantly concentrated with well-packed aromas of ripe black plum fruit with red and black currants, spicy oak and red and black floral perfumes. Medium-full bodied, rich, plush and succulent flavours of red and black plums are the feature on palate. Harmoniously melded layers of juicy and sweet red berries and currants are infused with spices and some oak lift. The fruit is supported by very fine, supple tannins and lacy, enlivening acidity, and the wine flows with vibrancy and richness to a very long, sweet, plummy and spicy finish. This is an elegantly concentrated, rich, lush and juicy Merlot and Malbec blend with a fine, supple structure. Match with lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 5-7 years.

Winemaker's Notes: "This is a blend of 46% Merlot, 45% Malbec and 9% Cabernet Franc from our Gimblett and Triangle Vineyards. The grapes were hand harvested, carefully destemmed and fermented in numerous small batch ferments over a 3 week period then gently pressed to oak barriques. Slow malolactic fermentation in barrel and minimal intervention has created a full, ripe and well balanced wine with a core of ripe fruit and excellent structure. 2013 was an exceptional vintage with perfect growing conditions allowing us to make wines of very high quality and age ability. The wine can be enjoyed now and will cellar for ten years from harvest. Elephant Hill is a family owned winery estate making premium, hand crafted wines. The whole lineup of these wines show purity, focus, elegance and life. From the Sauvignon Blanc to this gorgeous Merlot-dominant Bordeaux-styled blend. Dark red fruit, some mint leaves, and lift fill the glass. On the palate: rich fruits, with gorgeous dusty tannins and grip, and a finish that lasts at least a solid minute. These wines are also incredibly food friendly or are dynamite as is. A BBQ, nice dinner, with friends and family...or solo! 13.5% ABV.

Right from the first swirl of the glass this wine is truly captivating. The aromas are lavish and exotic - blackcurrant, bramble, anise, sandalwood, sweet baking spice, graphite and splintered oak. The flavors are just as expressive...juicy black and blue fruits coat the palate, exotic, rich oak tones, lovely mineral notes, bittersweet chocolate and ripe plum. The wine is medium-plus bodied but refined and elegant, priding itself on linear drive and purity over sheer weight and extract. This wine is truly spectacular and our direct import price almost farcical. I took a serious position on this wine as I believe it represent a truly spectacular buy that will bring our customers great pleasure over the coming decade. Enjoy!

This is my new go-to for Bordeaux styled wines. It has all the elements of cassis and black currant fruit as well as some olive tapenade and crushed herbs. It is fleshy and rich but has really nice acidity to keep it focused. Right now, I want to drink this with food but a couple of years down will polish those sweet tannins and make this great for anything.

All of the wines from Elephant Hill seem like such a steal for what they are offering. This blend is straight out of Bordeaux's Right Bank and offers some spice and dark fruit with lift, acid and a long finish. The complexity of the wine is far above what the price would suggest. The wine is lean and structured and worth buying by the case.

This is a great example of why New Zealand wines are some of the most exciting in the store these days. You just can't match the quality to value. Here you have New Zealand's answer to a classic Right Bank Bordeaux blend and ready to drink tonight. Full of concentrated dark fruit, vanilla, spice and dried tobacco leaf, this is a well-made sumptuous sipper at price point that can not be beat! - New Zealand is an extremely diverse wine-growing nation. The long history of producing wine started in the 1830s with wineries such as Mission Estate (1850) and Te Mata Estate (1896) still producing wine today. The two islands hold a multitude of different growing climates ranging from warmer areas such as Hawke’s Bay to very cool regions such as Waitaki, and Awatere. Most regions are defined as Maritime with the exception being Central Otago that has a moderate Continental climate with the high elevation creating dramatic diurnal swings in temperature. The plethora of grapes grown in New Zealand reflects this diverse microclimate make up.
