2013 Elephant Hill Bordeaux Blend (Merlot-Malbec-Cab Franc) Hawke's Bay
Dense and decadent red with dark berry, plum, chocolate, vanilla, liquorice and a suggestion of spicy oak. Very impressive wine from an outstanding vintage where Merlot was the star, at least at a regional level. Fruit flavours are supported by soft, chewy tannins. Approachable now but with obvious cellaring potential. Great value at this price.
This is impressively fruited on the nose displaying dark plum, blueberry, mixed spice, smoked meat and cedar notes on the nose, followed by a dense palate that is focused and silky with abundance of ripe fruit flavours. The wine offers elegant oak complexity, but the fruit purity is the real star here. At its best: 2016 to 2023.
A blend of 46% Merlot, 45% Malbec and 9% Cabernet Franc, from the company’s ‘Gimblett’ and ‘Triangle’ vineyards, hand-picked to 13.5% alc., the wine aged 12 months in 28% new French oak, then a further 6 months on lees in tank. Very full, near saturated black-red colour with youthful purple hues. The nose is elegantly concentrated with well-packed aromas of ripe black plum fruit with red and black currants, spicy oak and red and black floral perfumes. Medium-full bodied, rich, plush and succulent flavours of red and black plums are the feature on palate. Harmoniously melded layers of juicy and sweet red berries and currants are infused with spices and some oak lift. The fruit is supported by very fine, supple tannins and lacy, enlivening acidity, and the wine flows with vibrancy and richness to a very long, sweet, plummy and spicy finish. This is an elegantly concentrated, rich, lush and juicy Merlot and Malbec blend with a fine, supple structure. Match with lamb, beef and venison dishes over the next 5-7 years.

Winemaker's Notes: "This is a blend of 46% Merlot, 45% Malbec and 9% Cabernet Franc from our Gimblett and Triangle Vineyards. The grapes were hand harvested, carefully destemmed and fermented in numerous small batch ferments over a 3 week period then gently pressed to oak barriques. Slow malolactic fermentation in barrel and minimal intervention has created a full, ripe and well balanced wine with a core of ripe fruit and excellent structure. 2013 was an exceptional vintage with perfect growing conditions allowing us to make wines of very high quality and age ability. The wine can be enjoyed now and will cellar for ten years from harvest. Elephant Hill is a family owned winery estate making premium, hand crafted wines.
