Russell From is the man behind Herman Story Wines, a Central Coast phenomenon since 2001. Unpretentious, unmanipulated, and undeniably good wines. 93 points Antonio Galloni for the 2011 vintage of Late Bloomer: "Bright ruby-red. Fresh red fruit and floral pastille scents are complicated by hints of smoky minerals, allspice and white pepper. Graceful, focused and alluringly sweet, displaying excellent focus to its fresh black raspberry, spicecake and lavender pastille flavors. This smooth, open-knit Grenache offers a suave blend of richness and finesse, with no excess fat. Finishes sappy and very long, with smooth tannins coming in slowly. Shows no sign of heat despite its 15.8% alcohol Owner/winemaker Russell From produces a wide range of rich and usually flamboyant wines at his stripped-down winery in downtown Paso Robles, hard by the railroad tracks. His wines have quickly become among the most sought after bottlings from the region and, like his colleagues who are also high up in the Paso Robles pecking order, his waiting list is growing steadily. From and his wife, Vailia Esh (Desparada), welcomed a new child into the world the night before I visited on June 13 so I tasted through this new set of releases with From’s assistant winemaker, Giovanni Grandinetti."
