2007 Vega Sicilia "Unico" Ribera del Duero

SKU #1222708 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The wine might be a tad lighter than other vintages, but it's more structured than 2008; it combines elegance and power, is nicely balanced and should be able to develop in bottle for many years, although the quick evolution of the bottle once opened made me hesitate about its drinking window. Drink 2014-2024. (LG) (8/2015)

94 points Wine Spectator

This harmonious red is balanced and deep, offering ripe plum and currant flavors, with black pepper, tobacco, licorice and mineral accents. Delivers plenty of structure, with well-integrated tannins and lively acidity. The wine remains graceful through the long, spicy finish. Drink now through 2027. (TM) (10/2015)

93 points Vinous

Vivid ruby-red. Spice- and mineral-accented redcurrant, cherry, cured tobacco and candied rose on the highly perfumed nose. A juicy, sharply focused midweight offering lively red fruit and floral pastille flavors and earthy suggestions of chewing tobacco and succulent herbs. In a graceful, energetic style (due to the cool vintage, no doubt), with strong finishing cut, resonating floral character and velvety tannins coming in late to add shape and grip. A successful wine for the vintage, no question. (JR) (12/2015)

Jancis Robinson

Plenty of developed, earthy aromas on the nose, charming red fruit and lovely coffee grounds -- but there is indeed a (comparative) lack of body and concentration betraying a difficult vintage. Even so, those flavours are an absolute pleasure. 17.5/20 points. Drink 2015-2025. (RH) (3/2015)

Vega Sicilia is Spain's original, collectible red wine. There is an old joke in Spain: If you are buying a bottle of Vega Sicilia, it is either because you are wealthy or you are gifting it to your doctor for having saved your life! 2007 was a good vintage, not one that received the type of critical attention in the way that 2004 did, or 2009 and 2010 surely will, but it is a fine young Unico and needs some time in the cellar. It will surely make very old bones.

Additional Information:

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
