 The bottled 2014s include the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa, which is 93% Cabernet Sauvignon and 7% Petit Verdot. A classic much in keeping with the vintage characteristics, this charmer is loaded with sweet black and red currant fruit, some spice box, earth, and subtle oak. It is up-front, irresistible, full-bodied and layered with fruit and glycerin. The finish displays sweet tannin and the wine can be drunk now or cellared between 15-20 years. (RP)  (12/2016)

Founded in 1978, this Stags Leap District-based winery now farms vineyards in sub-appellations throughout the valley. Year after year, the Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is a classic bottling, sourced from vineyards mainly in the Stags Leap District, Oakville and Rutherford AVAs. The 2014 vintage was consistent and temperate, allowing for even ripening and balanced fruit. Winery's notes: "Ruby red in color, this wine opens with alluring aromas of fresh black raspberry, boysenberry and ripe red plum, swirling with hints of red licorice, fragrant cinnamon and vanilla crème brûlée. Enchanting and luscious, the palate opens with dark ripe cherry and juicy blackberry that join with suggestions of white pepper, fresh mint leaf and berry cola. The complex array of flavors lasts through the long finish, supported by polished tannins and integrated oak."

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
