2013 Primitivo Quiles "Cono 4" Monastrell Alicante

SKU #1217860

Here is a perfect example of what Spain's many lesser-known D.O.s are capable of when good vineyards are combined with sensible, traditionally-minded work in the cellar. Composed of 100% Monastrell, this wine is all black olives and meaty, savory characteristics on the nose, with a dark cherry fruited palate that also boasts balanced acidity, very good minerality and a complete dryness, a lack of any cloying ripeness or oak derived sweetness, which I find incredibly refreshing and appealing, particularly for a wine of this modest price. Try this with braised meat or lamb, or alternatively a hearty chicken and rice dish. (Joe Manekin, Spanish wine buyer)

Additional Information:

- Also called Monastrell and Mataro, Mourvèdre is most famous for the ruby-hued wines of Provence's Bandol region, known for their spicy, gamey, blackberry character, though the grape is grown throughout Provence and the Southern Rhône. Thought to have originated in Spain, it is second only to Grenache in vine acres, with the best examples found in Rioja, Alicante and Penedès.

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
