2012 Bodegas Alejandro Fernandez "Pesquera" Crianza Tinto Ribera del Duero

SKU #1217406 93 points Wine & Spirits

An indomitable vintage of Pesquera, delicious and wild: This wine’s aromas are reminiscent of raw meat and earth. Right now, the tannins scratch like a cat sprawled out on its back, soft in the middle, but dangerous to approach too closely. And yet the wine has lovely fruit depths at its heart. Too young to drink now, but if you dare, try it with chuletón de Avila (a grilled ribeye) and papas fritas. (6/2015)

92 points James Suckling

Ripe fruit with dried mushroom, blackberry and meat aromas. Full body, soft and silky tannins and a flavorful finish. Drink or hold. (7/2015)

92 points Vinous

Vibrant ruby. Musky, deeply pitched cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complemented by licorice, dried flowers and smoked meat. Sweet, expansive and focused on the palate, offering dried cherry and fruitcake flavors and an exotic suggestion of chewing tobacco. Vanilla and mocha qualities come forward on a long, smoky finish that features velvety tannins and lingering game and cherry pit qualities. Decidedly old school in style and structured to age. K&L Notes

Alejandro Fernandez is rightfully a Spanish icon, having been one of the early pioneers in the Ribera del Duero D.O. He is a champion of the local Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) grape variety, and has proven time and time again that his vines around Pesquera del Duero consistently produce rich, powerful, fragrant, and elegant Ribera del Duero that is capable of improving with bottle age. These are wines that are typically aged in more American oak, with a sensible barrel rotation and extraction that never veers too much to the overly dark and chewy side. This is a classic for a reason! (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish Wine Buyer)

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
Country:

Spain

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
