2013 Orin Swift "Mannequin" California Chardonnay

 The 2013 Proprietary White Mannequin, which draws fruit from diverse regions of Northern California such as the Carneros Basin and the Sonoma Coast, is actually a blend of 76% Chardonnay, 8% Viognier, 6% Marsanne, 5% Grenache Blanc, 3% Muscat and 2% Roussanne. This is amazing wine, a gorgeous, full-throttle, honeyed wine with a light-gold color, oodles of tropical fruits including pineapple and mango, rose petal and floral notes, and beautifully integrated oak (aged in 40% new French oak on its lees for 11 months). This full-throttle wine is completely different and more individualistic than anything I’ve ever tasted. It is a magnificent, full-throttle, exuberant dry white ... Dave Phinney, better known for his winery called Orin Swift, is one of the more creative young minds in all of the world’s winedom. He is doing things that are far beyond his modest age and deserves to be commended for the brilliant individuality/singularity of all of his efforts. (RP)  (10/2015)

The history of Orin Swift Cellars dates back to 1995 when on a lark, David Swift Phinney took a friend up on an offer and went to Florence, Italy to spend a semester “studying.” During that time, he was introduced to wine, how it was made, and got hooked. A few more years of university led to graduation and eventually a job at Robert Mondavi Winery in 1997 as a temporary harvest worker. Deciding that if he was going to work this hard, it would eventually have to be for himself, so in 1998 he founded Orin Swift Cellars; Orin is his father’s middle name and Swift is his mother’s maiden name. With two tons of Zinfandel and not much else, he spent the next decade making wine for others as well as himself and grew the company into a multinational brand that now includes 300 acres of vineyards in the Southwest of France. This international ambition has led to projects in Spain, Italy, Corsica, Argentina and other locations around the globe.

Since the late ‘90s Dave Phinney has been chugging out wine after wine under the brand Orin Swift. Probably the most popular of these wines is The Prisoner which began as a delicious affordable red full of top-notch Zinfandel and other mixed red varietals. Then a flurry of wines came: Mercury Head, Papillon, Saldo, Veladora. Heck, even some outrageous imports came down the pipeline from Spain and Southern France. Mannequin, for me, was one of the wines he made that always got lost in the shuffle. It just never seemed to have much in the way of personality or character. The 2013 vintage changed everything. Robust, fleshy, tropical and intense, this wine is fantastic for fans of big, rich, weighty whites. With a nose packed full of vanilla bean and orange 50-50 bars, this is a boisterous and flamboyant wine that has rich oak lacing and the exotic spices and fruit from the small amounts of Rhone varietals mixed in to the dominant component, Chardonnay. If you’ve ever liked one of Dave’s many wines, or super rich Chardonnay, this is not to be missed.
