 The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint, which comes from six vineyards in Napa Valley and is a blend of 95% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. The largest production cuvée at more than 3,200 cases, the wine is a beautiful dense ruby/purple, with ripe, blackcurrant fruit and licorice, a subtle hint of oak, silky tannin, full-bodied opulence, and very approachable and delicious, forward fruit. It should drink beautifully for 10-15 years and possibly last longer. With a viticultural legacy dating back to the late 1800s and proprietress Robin Daniel Lail’s great grand-uncle Gustave Niebaum, the founder of Inglenook Vineyards, there’s a lot of history in the Lail family. The wines continue on a very strong qualitative streak, with the less expensive Blueprint wines offering moderate value. Their top cuvées, the Georgia Sauvignon Blanc and J. Daniel Cuvée of Cabernet Sauvignon, are world-class quality. (RP)  (10/2015)

 The 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon Blueprint is one of the best versions of this Cabernet Sauvignon I have tasted. A rich, sumptuous wine, the 2013 possesses tremendous intensity. Mocha, torrefaction, smoke, new leather and dark-fleshed fruit, the 2013 captures a great balance of intensity, opulence and freshness, especially for such a big wine. Full-throttle to the core, the 2013 should drink well with minimal cellaring. Once again, Lail's Blueprint is a fabulous value. Robin Lail excels with big, textured wines. I found the 2013 and 2014 Cabernets terrific, and a step up from the 2012s, which I felt were pushed a bit too far. The Blueprint series, both the Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Sauvignon) are once again delicious wines that deliver tons of quality for the money on the rich, intense style Lail and winemaker Philippe Melka pursue here. - Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
