2013 Mas Karolina Côtes Catalanes

SKU #1211338 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Praise for Mas Karolina's 2013 vintage from the Wine Advocate: "These three impressive barrel samples were made by Caroline Bonville from her small estate in the Roussillon. They all showed beautifully, with solid purity of fruit and lively, fresh profiles that made them a joy to drink." (4/2014)

K&L Notes

Mas Karolina is the project of Caroline Bonville, cousin of Olivier Bonville proprietor of one of our favorite Champagne houses Franck Bonville. Caroline originally hails from Bordeaux where much of her family still resides. Looking for her own property, she settled in the village of Maury located in the Roussillon. There, her restrained sensibilities are making some of the most pristine, clean and balanced wines in the region. The Cotes Catalanes is a blend of old-vine Carignan and Grenache Noir. With notes of ripe raspberry and spicy pepper on the palate the wine is velvety and smooth, and delightfully dynamic.

Brimming with dark blue and blackberry fruit, loads of peppery spice, and a long, almost velvety finish, this blend of Grenache, Syrah, Carignan is an easily accessible food wine from our very first Direct Import from the Roussillon! The quality of the 2013 release is incredibly solid for the price, and there is enough lift and pure fruit to make drinking Mas Karolina a lively, enjoyable experience.

This project of Caroline Bonville, cousin to the much admired Olivier Bonville (creator of one my favorite lines of small-estate champagne) is putting out many excellent reds from the Roussillon area. This particular example is bright and spicy, with a overlay of ripe fruit that makes it a little too easy to drink. There is a purity of red fruits and soft, smooth tannins that make this little affordable beauty a real gem. Perfect with barbecue and smoked meats.

This is a beautiful, well-balanced red blend that provides plenty of value at this price point. There is ample dark fruit and a rich texture, but the acidity balances things nicely. Syrah lends some classic white pepper aromas. I can't get enough!

She broke my heart! A young man, and there I was... brand new to Brooklyn, and helplessly in love. Her rejection would haunt me. And so, imagine my surprise to find myself here, ten years later, and equally in love... WITH A WINE OF HER SAME NAME! I may have lost MY CAROLINA, but I'll forever retain my passion for this fantastic Roussillon blend. As complex as the most unique of women, the MAS KAROLINA COTE CATALANES is a wonder of a wine. Highlighted by its pure red fruit and subtle spice, this is one for the ages!

The workhorse red and one of my favorite value wines in the store is the CĂ´tes Catalanes, a blend of 35% Grenache, 25% Syrah and 40% Carignan. It has deep notes of boysenberry, cocoa, black pepper and nice minerality. From some of the younger vines, this has an openness and freshness that makes it immediately accessible.

This fantastic Rhone style blend is a blast from the past, with great traditional flavors and excellent brightness. It is still a wine from the sunny south, with plenty of texture and power, without loosing a big stamp from the terroir. This is the most exciting Rhone style blend we have had in years!
