2012 Ravenswood "Old Hill" Sonoma Valley Zinfandel
*Two Stars* Ravenswood's Old Hill bottlings are typically wines of great depth and structure, but they rarely charm when this young. While this one is indeed big, a bit tight and balanced to firmness with a very evident tannic spine, it shows inklings of early polish that makes us enthusiastic believers in its future. It is far from being anywhere near ready to drink, and it demands a minimum of another half-dozen years of age, but it teases with glimpses of layered complexity all the same, and its combination of structure and striking fruity depth is a guaranteed formula for unqualified success.
Powerful and deeply structured, with distinctive aromas of smoked pepper, black raspberry and fruitcake spices. The flavors balance ripe tannins and lively acidity, offering notes of blackberry, dark chocolate, licorice and mineral. Best from 2016 through 2024.
From a famed old site planted to 75% Zinfandel and 25% mixed black-skinned varieties, this wine conveys a minty-eucalyptus quality that tunes the acidity high against a medium-weight body. Austere at first on the palate, it expands as it goes, offering robust, dry tannins and layers of cardamom and coffee with time and air.
