2013 Sirkel (Scali) Pinotage Voor-Paardeberg Paarl

SKU #1195205 Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2014 Sirkel Pinotage is fermented 50% in used barrels. It has a simple strawberry winegum-scented nose. The palate is rounded with bulbous strawberry and red cherry fruit and an easy drinking, smooth finish that is clearly designed to appeal to the masses, which it probably will. (NM) (11/2015)

K&L Notes

Winemaker's Notes: "Expressive fresh, ripe raspberry and red fruit with a hint of sweet herbs. Youthful and elegant, this wine is ready to be enjoyed now. Sirkel encapsulates our dream of fulfilling our mission to be custodians of earth and guardians of man, caring for what has been entrusted to us. This wine completes the full seasonal circle by giving back to the land and the people committed to its creation. This Pinotage is produced with 100% organically grown fruit. Grapes are hand harvested before being de-stemmed and lightly crushed to release juice. Spontaneous fermentation turns the juice into wine, while beautiful colour is extracted by punching down the cap of skins. Halfway through fermentation the skins are pressed and the wine completes fermentation in barrel and tank and left to age for 8 months, followed by bottling. Every process is done with as little intervention as possible and as naturally as possible in the Scali winery. Our aim is to have as little impact on the environment as possible and therefor we use light weight glass bottles, natural wax as capsules and recycled paper labels, and each SIRKEL design is individually hand stamped on the label by seasonal workers in the off season, when they would normally not have an income. This labour intensive waxing, stamping and labelling forms part of our community project to benefit people in our vicinity with a means to sustain their families, and we’re very proud of what they are achieving!"

South Africa

- Now that it has adopted a multi-racial attitude, and now that the world has embraced its government and its exports, South Africa has become a major wine producer. Unfortunately, South Africa has had a difficult time joining the ranks of competitive winemaking countries. During the anti-apartheid sanctions in the 1980s, South African wine was dealt the huge blow when it was removed from the international market, and for political reasons it was quite difficult for wine producers to market wine to the black majority. Things are finally looking up for the wine industry here, and quality has never been higher. South Africa produces a grape cloned from Pinot Noir and Cinsault, called Pinotage, which is the country's unique varietal. Chenin Blanc (known as Steen) makes up one-third of its vines. Cabernet, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Shiraz are becoming increasingly popular as are Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay. Click for a list of bestselling items from South Africa.
