2010 Can Mayol Loxarel "Refugi" Reserva Brut Nature Penedes

Bottling under the trademarked name "Loxarel," Can Mayol is a winery that has been farming organically for more than a decade. The Mitjan family, owners of Can Mayol, also employ some biodynamic treatments. They keep animals, including chickens, a horse and a donkey named Garnatxa. The focus is on "Brut Nature" (no dosage added) Penedes sparkling wine (they abandoned the "Cava" designation a few years ago). Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive and pick up an incredible minerality, which makes these wines wonderfully distinctive and very exciting to drink. For the "Refugi" bottling, the tiny portion of Chardonnay that accompanies the old vine Xarel-lo is fermented and aged in 300-liter used oak barrels, adding some dimension and textural richness to this wine. It is their ripest sparkler to be sure, with rich meyer lemon aromas, perhaps showing a hint of quinine, leading to ripe, generously textured stone fruit flavors that show a lot of character, richness and phenolic qualities. The wine has seen nearly three years on the lees. This is such an original, high quality sparkler, a far cry from the vast quantities of well made, but uninspired cavas out there. Full-bodied with gorgeous yeasty notes, Refugi is both refreshingly easy-drinking and complex, thanks to the nod to tradition and experimental nature of its winemaker. Rich with citrus, this Penedes classic still shows hints of toastiness and finishes super dry. A favorite from sustainable Loxarel at a price that makes any night special.
