Black cherries, plums, mocha, leather and cloves are some of the many notes that meld together in the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve To Kalon Vineyard. A dark, pliant, brooding wine, the 2011 has an element of gravitas that is impossible to miss. All the elements meld together nicely in the glass. Hints of black cherry jam and spices show an element of racy sweetness from the late harvest. This is the first vintage in which the Reserve is 100% To Kalon. (AG)

This is the winery’s first vintage of prominently labeling its reserve-tier Cab under the To Kalon name, a nod to the vineyard’s importance in the blend, which is almost all Cabernet Sauvignon, with handfuls of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Soft and structured, it’s a subtly powerful wine, offering cassis, cranberry, dried herb and savory touch of black tea. *Editor's Choice* (VB)

Dark ruby. Less fruit and more black pepper on the nose than the 2012, along with aromatic notes of dried sage and mint. Then surprisingly intense if youthfully imploded in the mouth, conveying an Old World savory quality to its flavors of medicinal black cherry, chocolate, violet and herbs. A very accurate reflection of its difficult vintage, finishing with slightly drying, dusty tannins and good lingering fruit. Mondavi bottled just 4,300 cases of this wine, vs. a normal 7,500 to 8,000, although winemaker Janssens noted that the fruit was picked before the most damaging of the early-October rainfall.
