2011 Paul Hobbs "Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Decadent in coconut flake and vanilla, this is a fruity vintage of one of Hobbs’ top-of-the-top Cabernets. Soft and structured, the silky tannins deftly managed, it captures the essence of the Napa Valley’s best valley floor grapes at the hands of an expert winemaker, a textbook marriage of beauty and brawn.
The 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard is deep, powerful and earthy. Spices, leather, tobacco, menthol and cedar notes fill out the wine's broad-shouldered frame quite nicely. The tannins are quite formidable at this stage, but my guess is the Crane will always be a bit firm and bombastic in style. Paul Hobbs and his team led by winemaker Megan Baccitich have done a fabulous job with their 2011 and 2012 Cabernets. The 2011s are rich, generous and supple, all qualities that are rare for the year.
Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
One of my personal favorites, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Beckstoffer Dr. Crane Vineyard possesses flinty, wet stone-like characteristics, more rugged tannins and an overall more masculine personality than the Las Piedras. Its concentration is impressive for a 2011, the tannins are ripe, and the wine is beefy and mouthfilling. Although it may lack some of the nuances typical for this site, it is definitely a star of the vintage. It should drink well for 10-15 years. (RP)

Opaque ruby. The deeply perfumed nose displays scents of blackberry, blueberry, cracked pepper and Indian spices. Sappy dark berry flavors show both depth and vibrancy, picking up candied licorice and chewing tobacco nuances with air. Turns sweeter on the long, gently tannic finish, which leaves a zesty mineral note behind.
