 This is delicious and more-ish on the nose and palate with plum and chocolate aromas and flavors. Medium to full body with silky tannins. Juicy aftertaste.  (2/2016)

 Red cherry jam, raspberries, white flowers and spices flesh out on the 2013 Alter Ego. A juicy, succulent wine, the Alter Ego offers lovely up-front fruit married to the bright, lively acidity of the year. Sweet floral notes reappear on the lifted finish. This is a very pretty, feminine wine with plenty of near-term appeal. There is a lot to like here. The blend is 48% Merlot, 46% Cabernet Sauvignon and 8% Petit Verdot. (AG)  (4/2014)

 Really rich and pure fruit. Fantastic perfume -- really firing on all cylinders. Very impressive scent. The palate delivers wonderful balance too -- there is no lack of body or greenness whatsoever. Neither is there the great length and complexity of the most lauded vintages. This is undoubtedly a good 2013, however. (RH)  (4/2014)

46% Cabernet Sauvignon, 46% Merlot and 8% Petit Verdot. Lots of cola, licorice, red currants, smoke and cedar. Good fruit, ripe tannins, medium bodied, balanced and fresh. Fine tannins. Good value! Early drinker. Long, fresh and lingering finish. Sleeper. 91-93 points. Ralph: I'm absolutely wild about this wine! So much more sweet fruit to enjoy, hints of passion fruit and perfectly ripe grapes. Round and lush, this wine may not live as long as the first wine but it is flat out delicious and will be the first wine I buy. **

***½ to **** Wine of the Vintage! Beautiful nose, with lots of pretty berries, hints of spice, and herbs. The palate displays gorgeous, elegant red berry fruit--cranberry, red currant and cherry--with a layered, plush finish. This wine is bright and lively and feels like a fine Margaux. Considering that this wine will be available for under $70 and compares favorably with the stellar 2009 and 2010 vintages, this wine is in my opinion one of the best wines to purchase En Primeur.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the Médoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.

Specific Appellation:


- Margaux is the southern most of all of the appellations of the Haut Medoc. Located near St. Julien, it has more cru classe producers than the other four villages of the area. In addition to the legendary Chateau Margaux, there are five second-growths: Rauzan Gassies, Rauzan Seglas, Dufort-Vivens, Lascombes, and Brane Cantenac. While more people are probably familiar with the third growth Chateau Palmer, there are nine other wineries with the same ranking in addition to a trio of fourth growths and a pair of fifth growths. Because Margaux is comprised of five communes… Margaux, Cantenac, Soussans, Labardes and Arsac, the wines styles are diverse throughout the region with the more masculine tannic wines coming from the Cantenac side of the appellation. Because of a high percentage of Merlot planted in the region, many wines from Margaux are more round, feminine, and exotic that the other appellations of the Haut Medoc.
