2012 Williams Selyem "Terra De Promissio" Sonoma Coast Pinot Noir (Previously $90)
Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar
Vivid red. Pungent aromas of candied dark berries and lavender, with a peppery topnote. Juicy, expansive black raspberry and floral pastille flavors show excellent depth and put on weight with air. Changes a lot in the glass, taking a turn to blueberry and finishing sweet and lively, with firm grip and floral persistence. (ST)
This classy young Pinot is the second release from the winery’s only Petaluma Gap vineyard. It’s bone dry, mouthwateringly tart in acidity and delicate in structure, with complex cherry, cranberry, persimmon and cola flavors, nicely augmented by smoky oak. You can drink it now, after decanting for an hour or two, and it will soften a bit, or hold until 2020.
Pure, fresh and rich, with vivid raspberry, wild berry, boysenberry and floral notes imparting a good mix of flavor and structure. Ends with a dash of black licorice, gaining on the finish. Drink now through 2022. (JL)
Bright, red-cherry fruit sits comfortably at the heart of this trim and very well-mannered young Pinot, and, if not one for high extract and concentration, the wine gets good marks for clarity and varietal precision. It is medium-full-bodied with a slightly velvety feel and is buoyed by neatly placed acidity all the way through, and, as most fine Pinot Noirs are wont to do, it should gain with a few years of aging even though it is thoroughly charming right now.
Dark red cherries, sweet tobacco, dried herbs, leather and orange peel meld together in the 2012 Pinot Noir Terra di Promissio. This earthy, supple Pinot is an excellent choice for drinking over the next handful of years, while the fruit retains its pliant, juicy personality. (AG)
From the winemaker: "This wine has an expressive bouquet of cherry pie, raspberries, fennel, Asian spices and truffles. The heavier clay/loam soils add a textural component to the velvety tannins and rich flavors of wild raspberries, Bing cherries, cola, mushrooms and mocha coffee. This is a very sexy Pinot with lush textures and vibrant acidity -- our second offering from this cool site in the Petaluma Wind Gap region of the Sonoma Coast appellation. The acid frames this wine brilliantly and gives it a tremendous amount of focus. This is a wine that will improve nicely in the cellar for 5+ years."
