Bob Cabral received more fruit than usual from David Hirsch’s far-coast vineyard in 2012, so this wine is actually more than 20 percent Hirsch. The provenance of the fruit shows through as a delicious blast of energy, the wine lasting on a wild raspberry tang that pulls savory depth behind it, a sous bois undertone that speaks to the redwoods and sandstone ridges of the Sonoma Coast: direct, pristine and uncomplicated.

Bright ruby-red. Mineral- and spice-accented red and dark berries on the nose and in the mouth, with a suave floral nuance coming up with air. Silky and precise initially, then more structured in the mid-palate, with a note of bitter cherry emerging. Finishes with repeating minerality, fine-grained, gripping tannins and excellent energy and length. (ST)
This shows the lovely balance of both the winery and the appellation, with a silky, lightly tannic mouthfeel brightened by plenty of acidity. The flavors are delicate and complex, suggesting wild raspberries, thyme, cranberries and toast. (ST)
Colored by top-notes of dried brush in the nose and similarly showing subtle stemmy accents to its somewhat constrained flavors, this hesitant youngster takes its time in opening up and giving voice to its solid, red-cherry fruit. It is fairly firm and a bit angular in feel just now, and it gets slightly grippy at the finish, but, in the end, its sins are simply those of youth. Waiting is a good idea here, and we recommend that it be set it aside for another three or four years.
Sweet rose petals, raspberries, mint, cranberry and white pepper all take shape in the 2012 Pinot Noir (Sonoma Coast). The flavors are bright, crisp and nuanced in a Pinot that is best enjoyed over the next few years. Sweet floral and chalky notes add lift on the finish. (AG)
