2006 Arkenstone "Obsidian" Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
This is a devastatingly good Bordeaux blend from Howell Mountain. Based on Cabernet, it has all the flavor you could ask for in blackberries, cherries, cassis, chocolate, herbs, spices and sweetly smoked oak. But the structure is awesome. Near perfect tannins, soft and intricately firm, and grand acidity make for a total Cabernet experience. Tremendous now, and should age for years.
Wine & Spirits
Focused on the umami power of its tannins, this wine seems to suck the air right out of the glass. Hints of cool, vibrant fruit show up in the middle, but savory elements predominate in scents of black walnuts and tree-ear mushrooms. Decant it for osso buco or other braised meats.
Intense and concentrated, with dense, chewy dried currant, graphite, mineral, sage and espresso-cedary oak. A real mouthful of wine and tannins, but compelling in its complexity and grip. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petite Verdot. (JL, Web-2010)
