2011 Tablas Creek "Esprit de Tablas" Paso Robles Rhône Blend

SKU #1143535 93 points Vinous

Dark red cherries, mint, sage, tobacco, licorice and game take shape in the 2011 Esprit de Tablas. The mid-weight, translucent style is quite Burgundian. Distinctly wild, Mourvèdre-inflected nuances are laced throughout the expressive, perfumed finish. The blend is 40% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Counoise. (AG) (7/2014)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The only 2011 reviewed here, the 2011 Esprit de Tablas is meaty, earthy and chewy, with its Mourvedre component front and center. Made from 40% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 10% Counoise, it offers up notions of black fruits, peppered meats, earth and leather to go with a medium to full-bodied, juicy, and focused profile on the palate. Showing good, not great, levels of concentration, as well as plenty of integrated tannin, this is a much more streamlined vintage for this cuvee. It will be better in another year, and drink nicely through 2023. (JD) (8/2014)

90 points Wine Enthusiast

Very dry and fairly tannic, it’s severe on first sip and hard to appreciate, although there are some good black cherry, cola, leather, oak and black pepper flavors. It’s complex in its own way, and gets better as it breathes in the glass. Give it a good, long decanting ... (7/2014)

Wine Spectator

Exhibits a complex, well-proportioned mix of road tar, dark berry, mocha, espresso and chicory, ending with a spicy tobacco edge. (Web-2014)

K&L Notes

In 2011, Tablas Creek made the decision to rename their signature "Esprit de Beaucastel" blend "Esprit de Tablas," signifying that they're standing on their own recognition.

Paso Robles

- Located about halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles, this inland AVA enjoys a sunny and hot growing period while its seaside neighbors hang in the fog. Zinfandel is the traditional red grape of choice, though cabernet, chardonnay, and Rhône varietals are gaining favor. Most are made in a fruit-forward, early drinking style.
